Our clinic first opened its doors in early 2017 in order to exclusively treat tick-borne diseases, co-infections and associated health conditions.
Dr Joshua Berkowitz, Founder and Medical Director of the Lyme Disease Clinic in London, England had observed that this life changing disease was rising at an incredibly fast rate, and yet little was being done in the UK to establish reputable clinics with a science and evidence based approach to diagnosis and treatment.
Dr Berkowitz therefore sought the advice and mentorship of Dr Carsten Nicolaus, a world leading expert in tick-borne diseases who has treated over 27,000 patients in the past 30 years, in order to set up a clinic that would not only use the latest research and understanding about the disease, but that also yielded results; getting patients better.
The Lyme Disease Clinic today specialises in treating chronic, or late stage Lyme disease, as well as the many other tick-borne diseases that affect our patients. It is a common misconception that ticks only carry the Borrelia bacteria that causes Lyme disease. In reality, one tick bite can infect an individual with several different bacteria and parasites, each of which can cause their own separate illness and series of symptoms. Many of our patients spend years unwell, visiting one GP or specialist after another, often receiving multiple diagnoses based on presenting symptoms yet without any definitive evidence of the cause of the initial illness.
By the time we see many of our patients for the first time, they have already tried many different treatments and medications, and are often unable to work or live a normal active life due to misdiagnosis of the root cause: a tick bite. Our aim as a clinic is to help our patients finally obtain the answers they need, and ultimately to help each and every one return to good health and a normal lifestyle. Our patients regularly talk of wanting ‘to get their life back to the way it was’ and this is, at its most basic level, what we are here to do. We offer comprehensive diagnostics, treatments and rehabilitation programmes to patients both in the UK and around the world.
Our Lyme Team, led by Dr Berkowitz follows the methodology and treatment protocols established by Dr Carsten Nicolaus, founder of the BCA-clinic & Infectolab Americas. Our clinic continues to work in close partnership with Dr Carsten Nicolaus who provides ongoing and personal training, support and mentorship to our London Lyme Team on a regular basis.
This collaboration, combined with our membership to the Global LymeXpert Group (GLXG) and the official body for Lyme Disease: the International Lyme & Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) ensures that we are able to provide our patients with the latest advances in diagnostics and treatment protocols.
We work with highly specialised laboratories in the USA and Germany who are able to run the newest, most accurate and highly sensitive tests in order to determine not only the number of infections a patient may have, but also the count, or level of each bacteria or parasite, within the body.
We use medications and treatments that are based on research from the University of Stamford, USA, John Hopkins University, European centres of expertise and various research centres, Lyme specialists or clinics where work on understanding Lyme disease and how to treat it continues.
We are passionate about the work we do and support international efforts in battling this debilitating disease as we believe it is only through continual collaboration with other global experts that Lyme and other tick-borne diseases will be properly understood, acknowledged and treated.
